Recalculating Route
I was driving across the countryside. The road seemed familiar, the traffic was light and I was confident I knew the way.
Then I missed a turn.
For a moment, I felt that familiar frustration. "Great. I just wasted time." I looked at the navigation screen, expecting it to somehow confirm my mistake.
Instead, it calmly said: Recalculating route.
No criticism. No blame. No dramatic warning that I had failed. Just one simple message: Let's find another way.
That made me think.
Life is not very different from a GPS.
We all miss turns.
We choose the wrong career, trust the wrong people, invest our time in the wrong opportunities or simply realise that the path we are on is not leading where we want to go.
The real problem is what we tell ourselves after taking it.
We replay the mistake. We question our decisions. We stay stuck at the intersection, wishing we had chosen differently.
Meanwhile, life is quietly waiting for us to do one thing:
Recalculate.
Every detour teaches you something.
Some of the best opportunities arrive disguised as delays.
A rejected proposal leads to a better partnership.
A failed interview pushes someone towards entrepreneurship.
A setback becomes the reason we develop resilience we never knew we had.
After spending over two decades in the corporate world, I've realised that careers rarely follow a straight line.
Promotions get delayed. Projects fail. Markets change. Plans fall apart.
Yet the leaders who continue to grow share one habit: they adapt quickly. They don't waste energy proving they were right. They focus on finding the next best route.
Just like a GPS.
Stop measuring yourself by the turns you've missed.
Measure yourself by your willingness to adjust, learn and keep moving.
The road may change.
The timeline may change.
The plan may change.
But your journey doesn't have to stop.
Don't say, "I made a mistake." Say, "I'm recalculating my route." Sometimes the detour is exactly where the better destination begins.
